Finding Your Feet

When you first arrive, London might feel a bit…big. Don’t worry, you’ll find your rhythm soon enough. The city is divided into zones, with most universities and student accommodations located in Zones 1-3. Public transport, especially the Tube (London’s underground system), will be your best friend. Get yourself an Oyster card or use contactless payments for discounted student travel fares. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re hopping between classes, study sessions, and weekend adventures.

Pro tip: Download Citymapper.

It’s the app that’ll save you time and sanity when figuring out how to get from A to B in this massive city.

Accommodation: Where to Call Home

Most international students choose between student halls and shared houses. If you’re new to the city, student halls are a great way to meet people from all over the world. Plus, they usually offer easy access to your university, and utilities are often included in the rent (which means no unexpected bills!).

If you’re feeling adventurous or want to save a bit of money, shared housing with other students is a solid option. Areas like Camden, Hackney, or Shoreditch are student favorites, packed with personality and close to lots of universities.

Pro tip: Start your shared housing search early! Demand is high in London, so look on sites like Spareroom and Rightmove asap. Always visit the property or arrange a virtual tour, and check if bills are included—it’ll save you money!

Balancing Studies and Social Life

London’s academic scene is top-tier, but don’t forget that student life is also about new experiences. Make time for your studies, sure, but also take advantage of the endless things to do here. From museums (hello, British Museum and Tate Modern) to quirky markets (check out Brick Lane and Camden Market), there’s always something happening.

Join student societies! They’re an excellent way to meet people with similar interests and explore new hobbies. Whether you're into sports, gaming, or cultural clubs, there’s something for everyone—and it's a great way to expand your social circle.

Pro tip: Schedule both study time and social activities each week. Use methods like Pomodoro (25 minutes work, 5 minutes break) to stay focused, and join study groups to combine productivity with socializing. You'll avoid burnout while keeping up with friends!

Embracing London’s Culture

One of the best things about living in London is the diversity. You’ll meet people from every corner of the globe, and there’s no shortage of cultural experiences to dive into. Whether you’re catching a gig at an iconic venue, wandering through art galleries, or simply exploring London’s parks (there are a ton!), you’ll never be bored.

Take the time to explore neighbourhoods like Soho, Brixton, and Notting Hill, each offering its own vibe, food, and music. And don’t forget—many museums and galleries offer free entry, which is a major win when you’re looking for low-cost things to do.

Pro tip: London is full of festivals, from Notting Hill Carnival to Chinese New Year. Local boroughs also host free events, outdoor performances, and food festivals. Stay updated by following event pages or signing up for mailing lists—there’s always something happening!

Managing Your Finances

London has a reputation for being pricey, but with a bit of planning, you can live comfortably on a student budget. Start by applying for a student bank account—most UK banks offer perks like railcards, which will save you 1/3 on train travel.

Food is another big expense, but you can keep costs down by shopping at local markets or budget supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl. When it comes to eating out, London’s street food scene is incredible and wallet-friendly. Head to places like Borough Market or Boxpark for affordable and diverse cuisine.

Pro tip: Get an NUS Extra card (now called Totum) or UNiDAYS membership for student discounts on everything from clothes to entertainment!

Staying Safe and Well

London is generally a safe city, but it’s always good to stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night. Stick to well-lit areas and avoid empty streets if you're heading home late. If you're unsure, take an Uber or a black cab to get home safely.

For healthcare, you’ll need to register with a local GP (doctor) through the NHS. As an international student, you’ll have already paid the immigration health surcharge when applying for your visa, so you can access NHS services without additional costs.

Pro tip: Keep a trusted taxi number or ride-sharing app handy for late nights. Charge your phone before going out and share your location with a friend if alone. Familiarize yourself with NHS 111 for 24/7 non-emergency medical advice. In busy areas, secure your belongings to avoid pickpockets.

Make the Most of It!

The best advice? Embrace everything London has to offer! Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and London is the perfect city to do it. Push yourself to try new things, meet new people, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

You’re about to live in one of the world’s most exciting cities—so enjoy every moment of it!
